50 Years of AJ New Zealand

Celebrations within the Albert Jagger Group haven’t stopped yet, with Albert Jagger New Zealand celebrating 50 years of business.

Back to the beginning
In 1970, R.B Cooper took a trip to New Zealand with Norman Shepherd, General Manager, in search of new premises to expand. In 1972, Norman, his wife Anne and son Andrew emigrated to New Zealand and Albert Jagger New Zealand opened its workshop doors in Tuam Street.

Machinery was basic by todays standards, operating a 60-ton 2400mm long hydraulic press brake, a mechanical guillotine with 3mm x 2400mm capacity, a 2400mm long manual folder and a small set of powered rollers.

In 1975, Normans son Andrew joined the company, overseeing the manufacture and assembly of Antiluce™ fasteners, rear vision mirrors and 12/24V LED lights.

Soon enough, Albert Jagger New Zealand outgrew the space in Tuam Street and work started on building a 560 square meter custom-built workshop in Lane St Woolston Christchurch in 1977. By 1981, new machinery was purchased, including a 35-ton 2400mm capacity machine and hydraulic guillotine.

In 1984, Andrew Shepherd was appointed Managing Director with the passing of his parents following shortly after in 1991. Both Norman and Anne played a huge role in building the foundations of Albert Jagger New Zealand.

Throughout the years, the company have been involved in many local projects including the Christchurch Convention Centre and Christchurch Sports and Entertainment Centre, constructing, and installing steel work.

In 2010, Albert Jagger New Zealand won a $2.5 million dollar contract manufacturing bacon cooking trays for GWF in Australia. Due to the size of the project, 22 new employees were recruited, and new machinery was installed to keep up with the ever-growing order book.

Following the devastating earthquakes in 2011, damage was caused to the workshop requiring some repair work. This work took 12 months with an upgrade to the exterior of the building.

2015 saw the largest purchase to date, with the arrival of a new 2-kilowatt HD fibre laser machine, completely revolutionising the way the workshop is run.

Fast forward fifty years and Albert Jagger New Zealand are leading the way with state-of-the-art machinery and a focus on sustainability, with installation of a 44-kilowatt solar power system fitted to help reduce carbon footprint.
